Safer Inter Day 11 February 2014

Top Tips

Support - Encourage your children to go online and explore –but to stay safe and secure! Champion the use of sites that are fun, age-appropriate and educational.

Help your child set up any online accounts. Ensure you both find out how to use the safety tools and privacy settings and make sure your child’s profile is set to private which will only allow their friends to view the profile;

Social networking sites are fun for adults and young people alike. They allow people to stay in touch, share photographs, videos and chat to their family and friends, but how much information are you really prepared to share and with who?

Social networking sites are rapidly becoming a huge target from cyber criminals. Publicly available personal information can easily be gathered and used to steal your identity or worse crimes such as cyber-bullying, cyber-stalking and grooming are becoming more and more prevalent.

Communicate -Talk to your children about what they use the internet for and be part of their online life. Show an interest in the sites they visit – which sites? Why do they enjoy them?

Set limits -  Consider what they want to see and share along with how long they spend online. Make clear rules that your children should stick to and clear consequences if don’t adhere to them.

An effective antivirus solution with parental control is absolutely fundamental to the security of any computer network for the business and in the home. Equally a firewall is one of the most basic security mechanisms and should form an integral part of your internet security defences.

However, antivirus solutions and firewalls are only of value if they are regularly updated. The range and scale of internet threats today is constantly changing and in order to keep ahead it is vital that you ensure your antivirus software and firewalls are fully patched and up-to-date.

Also ensure your Windows Automatic Updates are switched on. Windows routinely checks for updates that can help protect your computer from security threats.

Keep up to date - Your children grow up fast and will develop confidence and new skills daily in the online world. Make sure you keep abreast of how they’re using the internet - talk to them about what they’re doing regularly; if they feel you understand they’ll be more likely to come to you with a problem.

Share - Make sure all your equipment is kept in a communal place so you can be there if they stumble across something they don’t want to see or you think they shouldn’t see.

Know - Make sure you’re aware of every device that connects to the internet in your home – even TV’s connect to the internet nowadays and older children may take advantage of the fact you’re unaware of devices to break the rules! Your children will have access to many different devices that can be used to connect to the internet.

Highlight - Your children should be aware not everyone is who they say they are and they should never meet someone they’ve met online.

Control - By setting parental controls on all devices that access the internet you’ll be helping to prevent your children accessing inappropriate content. They can be used to set boundaries – settings can be adjusted as your children develop.

These tips aren’t a definitive answer to keep your children safe online but they’ll go a long way. Showing interest in your children’s online activity and setting boundaries are crucial to keeping up-to-date and keeping your child safe online.
